With a filter change and with the '82 or '83 diesel Vanagon alloy oil
pan, Bentley says 4.25 qts. I believe.  4.5 qts. might be high.  I add 4
qts. when changing the filter, in my I4 1.8 RV, in an attempt to avoid
foaming.
