As with many imported cars, VW models sold in the US have dual circuit brakes from '67 on, single before that, since the dual circuit brakes were a federal requirement starting in '67.
I once knew a guy who had a '69 MG with single circuit breaks.  I told him something wasn't right.  Eventually he found out he really had a '66 with a '69 title!
