Subject:What controls pre-ignition flashing of warning lights?

Hi everyone,
A quick question for electrical system experts. What controls the
blinking of the temperature and oil warning lights after you turn on the
ignition but before you engage the starter. On one of my vans, blinking
time varies from 5 to 30 seconds or more. The coolant light often
continues to blink even after the engine starts (again, for varying
lengths of time). Any suggestions for a culprit would be welcome.
