Subject:Re: Can overtightening the oil filter on an 88 cause coolant leaks?

It sound like he might have turned the oil cooler
when he tightened the filter. It's possible that one
of the two coolant hoses that connect to the cooler
have begun leaking.

Take off the oil filter and take a look at the coolant
hoses. If they look twisted, that is what happened.
You might be able to loosen the big stud/nut that the
oil filter threads into and re-position the cooler and
re-tighten the hose clamps. Its doubtful that this
will fix the leak. but you never know.

If it was me, I would replace both coolant hoses that
go to the oil filter and the o-ring that goes between
the cooler and the block. This is not easy to do, it
might be worth finding someone who knows their way
around Vanagons to do it for you.

It is also possible that one of the coolant hose
bosses on the oil cooler are cracked, in which case
you would need to replace the oil cooler. It isn't a
very expensive part and the bosses where the coolant
hoses connect tend to corrode.

Good luck,

Tim
