Here's my combined thread response:  
A beater is like everyone has said- it's beat up, but beats walking along the freeway.  

More heat can be obtained by using the 87 C thermostat. If you have a gas heater -not much tweaking there but look a the fuel lines please .

 I have seen five Vanagons that burnt this year from leaking fuel lines in the engine compartment. I know that is off topic but I couldn't help it- the remaining road stock of Vanagons in America are going up in smoke.
