Dan is great. A VW trained mechanic and knows all about VWs.... even Vanagons, Vanagon problems and Syncros.
The only problem with someone good is getting a slice of his time to work on your van.  Make an appointment and he will get to you.  I know that you never plan ahead to have a breakdown so this may not be convenient at all.
If you do locate someone in Syracuse, please share your experience with the list.
