[Snip] Any idea if there was even an oil thrower on > 1980 2.0L engines? I've got 4 different books/manuals that cover rebuilding TypeIV engines and have rebuilt 2 of these motors personally. I've never read about or seen an oil thrower on these engines. > 2. How dreadfully important is it that the hydraulic > tappets be reinstalled in the same place from which > they were removed? Everything I've read says keep the lifters in their original bores because of the individual wear pattern. > 3. What are the pros and cons concerning push-rod > tubes? There are different types so I've noticed. I think well-installed original equipment tubes are just fine. They certaily don't go flying off and probably leak as little - or as much - as more complicated types. > 4. The large end of the connecting rod takes a split bearing - one in each shell - while the small end of the rod takes a pressed-in bushing. It sounds like you're doing all this without benefit of a manual. --------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Young '81 Vanagon Lafayette, CA 94549 '82 Westfalia ---------------------------------------------------------------
