here's what i did:
first, regret not just going to the dealer and getting the
correct,perfect vw antenna.
realize i have 15 bucks stuck in the new ant and will make do.
spend 3 hours going to auto parts stores.
buy weird adapter at wallmart with about 8 ends on it. another 6 bucks.
open it up. none of the adapters fit the heidleberg radio.
take the old antenna and cut the plug off it to reuse. it's broke
anyway.
cut one of the most useless plugs off the adapter.
splice these two together and plug the ends into ant and radio.
it works real well when i'm not moving.

this was also my first repair attempt---that cheap ant. is so appealing.

i think if i knew how to splice the antenna wire i would be ok.
anyone know the correct way?

Welcome. You are now in the Twilight Zone.

Yes, the factory radios use a propietary sized connection for the
antenna. So very annoying. There may be adapters from Crutchfield or
similar places. I don't know. I replaced my factory radio with an after
market one.
