When I replaced my clutch due to a shot pilot bearing, I used a round flat-nosed punch to break the outer bearing shell. I placed the punch against the flat surface of the shell lip and drove it with a hammer parallel to the shaft. A few good whack later the punch cut through the shell and I was able to pry out the bearing with a screwdriver. No damage to the transmission. Some play in the shaft is normal, but I don't know the spec. Chris S. '85 Westy www.knology.net/~vw/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wolfsburg_campers
