I have NO previous experience with VW auto transmissions, so please forgive
my ignorance. I have a newly-acquired '90 Carat that won't go. Not only will
it not move forward or backward, but the transmission makes a loud squealing
noise similar to a loose power-steering or A/C belt. It does this whether
the selector's in neutral, reverse, drive etc. The PO thought it might be
the torque convertor, but again, I have no idea. I plan on pulling the
transaxle and having a look, but I'd like to know what I should be looking
for. Any help would be MUCH appreciated. I'm also in need of a source for a
rebuilt trans, assuming this one is shot. If it matters, the engine is
fairly recent, but the trans looks original to the van (~110K).  TIA-
