but the transmission makes a loud squealing  noise similar to a loose
power-steering or A/C belt.

I don't know anything about the auto either but I can relate this.
If the filter in the tranny is stopped up that is the sound I've had with
many GM, Ford products.
If the owner tried out of a can fixes this will often stop up filter
screens.
