Who sells AT rebuilding sets?

What exactly is rebuilt in a torque converter?  Recommended converter rebuilders?

Is the AT up to a TDI powerplant upgrade?

Is there a replacement final drive gearset to better match the rpm/torque characteristics of the TDI?

If these are in the archives, could you point me at approximately where I should search?  My searching the archives, done some time ago, was spectacularly unsuccessful and long!
