Even with a syncro:  My 91 syncro westy did/does not do well in soft
sand.  Far to heavy, & not enough power to surf over the sand, and
my tires were narrow (185s).  But, with the creeper gear, as long as
one wheel had traction the van moved along over tough terrain.
