Subject:Acckk! My gear juice is *blue*...

O.K.... I figured I better crawl under and check my tranny oil.
I've had the bus for a month now and still haven't looked....
I figured out real quick that my 17mm allen wrench doesn't fit
because all that external shift crap is in the way.
I cut the allen down with the die grinder and cut-off wheel. About
an inch off the end and it fits nice. I pulled the plug out of the tranny
and it was obviously full, as a small dribble of oil ran out of the plug
hole and down my arm. Mmmmm, that distinctive stench of gear oil....
But wait, what's this..? Ackkk! The oil is BLUE!

O.K, I've checked the gear oil in a lot of VW trannys over the last
few decades but I ain't never had nothin blue run down my arm
while I was doing it...

I assume that the oil is probably something synthetic. It stinks like
regular gear oil, but it's clear blue, and rather thin in consistency
compared to plain old 90w gear goo.

I'd like to carry a spare quart around with me, but I have no idea
what brand or type of oil this is....

Does the blue color identify it as something specific?
Is this the redline oil that people talk about? Or some other goo?

Anybody have a clue what kind of blue juice might be in my gear box?

Thanks much...

Steve
