Chris, I used a piece of Velcro about 2" wide the full length of the ashtray. As far as using it as a drink holder.not! I have a center consol that I use for drinks when I'm moving. I may set a cup of coffee there for a moment but never longer. It is more of an "additional horizontal surface" to hold thing rather than in the shelf by the speedo/tach. That are has picked up too much salt from BK, McD, etc. Pens, gas card, key to the storage unit, a little bit of change, the extra ignition key, and a set of earplugs. Oh and a little post-it pad. It is more of a freeway cup holder at best. I put it in the dishwasher and it came clean and then painted it flat black to match the dash of my white 90 GL. It is one of the better dash mounted holders I've seen, it Velcro's to the top of the ashtray. I now have a place to put all those coffee, bread, etc punch cards. i have one too, theyre flimsy and dont hold anything other than a coke can (wouldnt trust em with anything taller than that, you do a power stop and your windshield will be wearing the contents of your beverage container) but they WERE the only VW vanagon OEM dash cupholder made, and sold as an acessory at the dealer in the early 80's.. :<) i ended up screwing it to the ashtray lid cuz the velcro didnt cut hold it in place.. chris
