Allow me to sidle into another quadrant of this topic
and pose the question: What is the PURPOSE of these
trim pieces? Simply to dress-up the rain gutters? To
protect the rather delicate metal edge?

I think I'm even missing the big long ones up on the
roof rain gutters, seemingly with no ill effects. If
they're not really needed for anything, I'd prefer to
leave them off. Especially seeing as how the chrome
tends to fade and has to be replaced every 20, 40, 60
years ...
