If I remember correctly, someone recently posted about this dilemma and,
because the "splined" barrel that the wiper slides onto is soft, almost
lead-like material, used a small amount of steel wool wrapped around the
barrel. The composition of the steel wool is compliant and easily formable
and acts like a shim.
