the factory installed the control unit upside down, and water can pool into
the housing, causing exactly what you describe. After drying, install it
with the harness connections in the down position, this will keep it dry.

Ask me how I figured this out (4 vanagons in our household)

Subject: Super fast idle

> Hello, I replace the idle control unit on my '88 Vanagon and the result is
that it runs fine for a while, then the idle will jump up to 2200rpm and
refuse to return. Even turing the ignition off then on makes no difference.
I did clean out the idle valve when I replaced the electronics. The o2 and
temp II sensors were replaced a year ago.

after starting (~60 degree weather) it will experience about a 10-15 second
period where it will appear to stall out when going from idle (full throttle
gets it past this.) It only happens when starting from a cold engine, and
only does it once.
