I used some silver ACE Hardware high temp paint on my catalytic convertor when I redid my exhaust 2 years ago, and it still looks like new. The flange fitting with I installed between the cat and the muffler is completely surface rusted now, I wish that I would have painted it. The exhaust pipes tend to get hotter than the cat, but some coating is better than none.
