Does your gas guage work when the light is blinking???

I had a simialr problem for years.  The coolant light would blink and the gas guage would stop working (move towards empty).  I found that by punching the dash (in a loving manner), I could get the blinking to stop and the guage to come back towards an accurate position.  I eventually opened the dash and cleaned and tightened up all the electrical contacts I could find.  I did not actually find the faulty connection, but the problem stopped. . . . . . . but I was not losing coolant.
