Subject:checking aux air valve - and looking for vaccum leak
From:Steve Selin

Hello,

My van 1981 Automatic Westy will not idle well when cold. And has a low
vaccum in the air distribution box.

I have checked my aux air valve.
It does get voltage (12-13) when van is on.
The plate is not fully open when stone-cold. With a probe I can push the
plate open to expose about 100% more open space. This leads me to think
maybe the plate is not fully open even when cold. Is this correct?

Also, when hot (190 degrees from the oven), and also after being in the van
running for at least 5 minutes I can still blow air through the aux air
valve, though with more resistance. Is it possible that the spring is worn
out? I have never inspectd a good one, so I don't know what to compare it
to. Bently says that onc cannot blow through a warmed up aux air valve - is
this true or is it just harder to blow through it?

The Ohms read fine (29-30)

My van also has a low manifold vaccum and I am trying to find out if there's
a leak. If the aux air valve is not closing fully, would this cause the
vaccum to be lower?

Thanks,
Steve
