Think this could have been a political statement? Environmentalists are not popular with some groups in your area, and the truck owner might have associated a VW with an environmental activist. Any bumper stickers on the van? I have a nephew (by marriage) from Eureka. He is a member of a logging family (they own a lot of redwoods in your area), and I know how he feels about what he refers to as "environmental crazies and eco terrorists."
