kicking the gas to turn off the alternator and oxs light, I get a

This can be caused by a bad connection in the little blue wire that
pushes on a spade connector at the alternator.  If it's not at the
alternator connection, then it's probably at the other end (dash panel).

Or ... the alternator brushes are due for replacement.
