David,
      Check the brushes but more likely if the
alternator is as old as the van it could be a bearing
and perhaps the rear alternator bearing.

My 82 Westy is having charging problems.  I took the
alternator out and
had
it tested and it tested fine.  I put it back in the
van and it
intermittently
charges.  Any suggestions?
