Subject:Re: just passed CA smog, but poor mileage

Your CO reading indicates your mixture is close to ideal. The high HC is
due to the fuel not getting ignitied or getting exhausted before the
burn is complete. Check for ignition miss, lean miss due to worn
injectors-vacuum leak, or bad valves, pistons. A new cat will also help.
If everything is right and the Cat is good, those numbers will be near
0.

Subject: just passed CA smog, but poor mileage

Hi all,

I just got my 84 Wolfy Manual WBX smogged 4 days ago, CA smog. It
passed. But I am getting worse fuel mileage than I used to. To the tune
of 15/16 mpg instead of 18-20mpg. It was in the shop because the water
pump was leaking, and the driver side exhaust pipe, right after the
header, the one the OX sensor screws into, was replaced, because it had
a crack. Went to smog it afterwards and the results were: HC: 127@15mph
(129 allowed, 46 average), 87@25 mph (101allowed, 32 average). The CO
were 0.27@15mph (0.84 max allowed, 0.16 ave), 0.19@25mph (1.06max
allowed, 0.15 average) the NO were 822@15mph (1076 max allowed, 406
ave) and 299 @ 25mph (1103 max allowed, 349 ave).
Seems like I barely passed on he HC, which means I have a rich mixture,
right??
Where should I start looking?? Could my fuel tank/lines be leaking??
I'm guessing it's the OX sensor. Any and all input greatly appreciated.

Happy Trails
