I had the same problem on our 86 Westy. In our case the water was coming in through the bolts that hold the luggage rack on the roof. I forgot to put silicone around them when I re-installed the luggage rack (the rubber washers need some help to seal the holes properly). There also should be some draining holes that might be plugged by some debris. I expect that the insulation is wet between the headliner and the roof. Time to take the headliner out and let it dry. Better yet replace the insulation with Roxul insulation which does not absorb any water (available at Home Depot - Canada). Drove a 1986 vanagon for 6 years. Bought at new 2002 Eurovan Camper in Fall 2001. Rarity of the vehicle and scarcity of professionals who know anything or will work on it makes belonging to a "support group" critical, particularly since little things come up all of the time. Right now, I have a fairly big thing. The Winnebago pop top is holding water during heavy rain. Then when I start up and pull away, water dribbles into the van on the front passengers head. A pretty healthy dribble. Help!
