II worked in Germany for a while for a company that had a fleet of such vehicles. I think you will find the engine is the same as put in the diesel Rabbit/Golf/Jetta of the same period. Try finding a Haynes manual for the diesel Rabbit/Jetta as they often cover European models as well. I doubt it is anything exotic.
