The back side of what was once known as Purgatory and now known as Durango Mountain (bleck >P ) has some really spectacular camping. Hermosa Creek is back there and has along side it one of the best trails in the area for hiking and mountain biking. I give it 5 stars and two thumbs up. It's a dirt road back there, which can get a little rough, so just take it slow. Should take about an hour to get back there from Durango and Durango Mountain is on the way to Silverton. We are heading out on Wednesday to spend a long weekend near Telluride CO. We are leaving from SLC, UT and going through Moab. We've been to Mesa Verde before and may go again. We've also been to Durango and enjoyed our visit there. We're thinking that we may hit Silverton, and possibly bounce over to Ouray. Any interesting towns/sites nearby that we should visit? In addition, if anyone has any recommendations for primitive camping areas and must-do hikes please pass them on. Thanks -Phil '89 Westy
