So I get a call from someone purporting to be Larry Chase, says he's off the
Anacortes-Sidney ferry and could he drop in?

I say of course, and give directions to my house, at the most 10 5 minutes
from where he called from.

One hour later I flag down a loaded white Syncro Westy at the head of my
driveway and talk to the driver, a dazed and somewhat confused bearded
fellow. He claims he is Larry Chase.

But I wonder?

I see the laptop and GPS linked mapping software...so why did he get lost?

mmm, that black "pod" on the roof of the van makes me wonder.
