Okay, this is probably a silly question, but...
Is the shift lever for '82 the same on aircooled and diesel models?

I just bought a shift extension for my van from Bus Boys, and I find that
while it threads onto the shaft nicely, the knob won't thread onto the
extension.  The knob has a non-threaded, tapered section to blend it into
the shaft, and that tapered piece is too skinny to fit over the extension.

Is this what people mean when they talk about 14mm vs. 12mm shift levers?
I thought that just referred to the threads on the end.
