84 Waterboxer?  Check your idle valves in the top right corner of the engine
bay.  They'll have a 'Y' vacuum line plugged in to them.  One is for your PS
and the other your AC.  When AC kicks on they kick up your idle.  Check for
malfunction.  I don't have my Bentley handy, but it does reference these
parts.
