Linkage. Vague shifting is often a sign of various front end and back end linkage parts getting worn...every 20 years they wear out..Damn cheap sleazy VW stuff. Thank you to everyone for their willingness to share advice. I have acquired a used transmission (high g-force 4 speed) that I need to swap into my van. It is complete with the exception of the main shaft that I need to swap out of my current transmission. What gaskets, bolts, bushings, sleeve, etc. do I need to complete the swap? Any critical advice that is left out of the Bentley manual? Anything else that I should attend to while the vanagon is undergoing the transplant? I have the 12pt tool for the cv bolts, and the boots are in good shape. Should I get the cv boot kit? The clutch has about 500 miles on it (before the transmission failed). The gearshift is vague. "Ollie" has given about 140k of faithfull service (including a 10K round trip into Mexico from Iowa) and I don't want to have to sue myself for transmission swap malpractice. Thanks Chris Mugge mugge@mchsi.com 82' Diesel Westy "Ollie"
