Subject:Testing Radiator Thermoswitch
From:Douglas L Urner

We've got an '84 Vanagon with a newly rebuilt 2.1 engine installed. The
water temperature gauge reads right at the high edge of the LED. It's
stable there, but on my '83 the needle was on the low edge of the LED.
I've never heard the fan run. So I'm wondering if something is amiss.

So far I've tested the fan by pulling the connector at the radiator
thermoswitch and jumping to the high and low speed pins. The fan runs
as I'd expect.

Is there a way to test the switch without having to pull it -- and then
replace coolant and bleed the system? How often should I expect the fan
to run? I'm in Western Washington, so it's hot, but not *that* hot.

Thanks, Doug
