Subject:older cars get low balled in value, but VW's hold value

hello everyone why is it that insurance comapany's like to value
older cars as low on the value scale? what i'm getting at is say i have body damage and the say my van is worth 1500 they say!, but the body work is ?? maybe going over the value. and they might what to total it..  i have what i spent on
the van as backup.

any light on this?
