Be aware that towing consists of TWO factors. Accelerating and BRAKING. While your Vanagon may be capable of slowly accelerating more than 1500 pounds, STOPPING that additional weight (especially if your trailer doesn't have auxillary brakes) is a whole 'nother matter.
