ive owned a number of both..  and  i had a 87 GL 4speed manual that had the
3-4 gear slider hub crack problem.  ive never had a automatic vanagon that gave
me any transmission troubles.   if i were you id get another auto or rebuild
yours.  just my personal preferance..
i have a good auto trans if you need one.
