I lived in Austria for long enough to have seen this one. The man's right: 
snow tyres are the way to go. If you *do* use spikes (as we called them) 
use them for *ice*, and on all four wheels. It's no good having traction 
to propel yourself forward if you can't steer or brake properly because 
you lose traction at the front end.
