This is where a spacer ring goes,remove the old ones
and clean the heads.  VW has quit installing those
spacers, it is now a metal to metal seal between the
head and jug, just put the spacer on the bottom of the
cylinder and just take the increase in compression,
should not make enough difference to bother with. Phil
