This is the classic problem resulting from a poor ground on the engine - driver's side head. Remove and clean this brown ground wire and it will solve the problem. Remember not to just *look* at that wire - as many people do - it needs to be removed and cleaned up. - Laurence ---------------------------------------- Laurence Smith Hamilton, Ontario, Canada 90 Westy (fanumbos) 87 GL / 91 Subie 2.2 ---------------------------------------- > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List > [mailto:vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM]On Behalf > Of Andy Morse > Sent: Tuesday, September 09, 2003 2:05 PM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Sputtering still !!!!! > > > I 've owned this van for a month now and I still can't > drive it! 86 syncro. > Symptoms...starts fine, new plugs, new water pump, new fuel > filter.. gets up to > temp fine and then starts cutting out, black smoke, back > fires...BOOM.., no > power, then sometimes regains it for a very short spell.
