Or a carefully calibrated knuckle. ;)

I put in the amount they said to put in, and I could find the fluid suface
with my fingertip a short distance below the hole, so I called it good.
If they can arbitrarily change the fluid level just to make shifting
easier, the exact level can't be all that critical.
