At least here in the states and in europe it got Audi's quattro system. It is a permanent all wheel drive system with a central differential and two vacuum controlled differential locks. Its the drive train audi originally designed for military vehicles such as the Iltis and its almost identical to the one that later achieved such great notoriety in their legendary quattro rally cars. Quite a heritage for an otherwise sedate looking station wagon. It works so well in the VW Quantum/Passat and in the ur/4000/5000 audis; it just seems like it would have been a natural (and less troublesome) system for the vanagon if it could have been easily "reversed"! mark
