Andrew, I've opened my bivalve (Westy), and cannot see any "muscle scars". Perhaps I need to me in the southern hemisphere to get a low enough light angle?? Never suspected VWs were mollusks. ;-) Thank you, Karl Wolz -----Original Message----- From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of Andrew Grebneff Sent: Saturday, October 25, 2003 9:43 PM To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Subject: Re: Emailing: Suspect Bivalve 001 (2) >Hi, Andrew! > >Here is the first view; I don't seem to be able to send both views >on the same e-mail, evem though I've followed instructions; and if I >put them both in a folder, nobody can seem to open it. > >Here goes, >Linda >----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- >Your files are attached and ready to send with this message. > >Attachment converted: 36 GB:Suspect Bivalve 001 (2).jpg (JPEG/ogle) (00044C9F) Hi Linda Those sure look like lepadomorph scuta to me. I was fooled by a Recent one too... had it cataloged as an aplysiomorph (seahare) gastropod for a few years... Bruce Marshall spotted my mistake. If you look closely you will see that there is not a bivalve hinge structure; if held under a strong low-angle elgih, the muscle scars will be nonmolluscan also. I attach an image of my fossil specimen (cc to list will strip it); it is an unusually strongly-sculptured form. Measures about 30mm, so it's a huge gooseneck, too. I will have John Buckeridge, a barnacle specialist, examine it when he's down in Dunedin for the Geological Society Conference in November. And if I'm right, it will be recataloged in the Geology Dept collection! -- Andrew Grebneff Dunedin, New Zealand 64 (3) 473-8863 <andrew.grebneff@stonebow.otago.ac.nz> Fossil preparator Seashell, Macintosh & VW/Toyota van nut _________________________ I want your sinistral gastropods! _________________________ Q: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation.
