What were the weather conditions going to and from destinations? Did you have a headwind or a tailwind? Was one way more uphill/downhill than the other? These types of questions need to be answered before you can narrow down the search to simply a certain supply of fuel. An example when I had a Golf TDI: Driving from Winnipeg to Edmonton means that you are taking a 1250km trip oneway, going gradually uphill the whole way. With an overfilled 65L tank of diesel, with the prevailing westery winds there isn't a chance of making the trip to Edmonton on a single tank. Coming back to Winnipeg, with the proper conditions, you can do it - and travelling 110 km/hr to boot (my '86 Westy has a hard time driving that fast - period...) There's a pretty major change in fuel economy, but it's do to the conditions not the quality of fuel in Winnipeg or Edmonton. An Alien was hidding in my engine? do not know, but that a sure fact! On my last trip to USA/Mexico with my sick 73 Westy i spent over... $1500 to 2000 in fuel, i tried every company, every grade and i didn't see any difference in millage!!!!!!!!! or power, BUT, my engine was sick like hell. In California, where i had most of my problems, i caught water in one of my fuel refill!!! 3 days to find the problem! (average millage per tank 225/250km) This summer my engine was back to normal power, i went to cape cod again, average millage per tank (with single weber well tune) was 350km, same in Canada and USA! On my last big Vanagon(87) trip to the west cost, my best ever millage per tank was 512km with one tank, that was in Nevada, average was 400/450 km per tank, about the same in Canada. So my conclusion: None, an Alien was hidding in my Civic engine. i just don't care about fuel company, every brand / grade is the same for me, the cheapest is the best.
