Take a look at the subaruvanagon group at www.yahoogroups.com

There are several hundred folks doing (or completed) Subaru
conversions into Vanagons - several are 6 cyl Subaru engines - most
are 4 cyl 2.2L Subaru engines.

www.kennedyeng.com sells the adapter kits, headers etc for these
conversions.

www.smallcar.com has adapter kits as well.
