Subject:1981 Vanagon Brake Servo Replacement?
From:Michael S. Nichols

Hello from Atlanta GA. My daily driver '81 has mysteriously lost brake fluid over the past week. I found a leaky clutch slave cylinder, and therefore replaced both master and slave, bled clutch, and all seemed fine. Today however I noted a clutch judder, checked the brake fluid reservoir, and discovered that I again had an almost empty brake fluid reservoir. Careful inspection of the clutch and brake lines, drums and calipers showed no fluid loss/wet areas. The brake m/c is one year old Busdepot unit, servo unit original. Questions-- should I replace both brake M/C and servo? Remanufactured units OK, or should I only go with new more expensive Busdepot or Vanagain.com units? Is the servo unit replacement the job from Hades---R&R dash, heater controls, instrument panel...? Any short cuts to replacement? How long should this job take someone who does all of his own van work? Anything else that I should do whilst I have the dash off the van? Thanks!

Regards,

Michael and Christina Nichols
