Just to add, my 82 diesels all had a knob for this feature. On the 1990,
there is a section of the lower dash which pulls out in the same fashion. Best I
can explain it is VW hid the "knob" by making it part of the trim. Looks like a
miniature pull-out ashtray to the casual observer.
