My wife and I and the dog took a 2 month cross country trip in the summer.  The space in the top was invaluable..made is
so much easier to get "bedded" down at night.  Stuff goes up there to get it out of the way of the bed.  And, yes in the
summer the upper bunk was wonderful even if the lower bunk was more comfy.
