I'm considering buying a '90 Vanagon with transmission trouble. The
auto will be a new experience for me. All my current and previous vans
are manuals.

How good is the automatic? I'm not a fan of autos with small engines,
but I'm willing to try if they tend to hold up. Any recommendations on
repair shops in the NC/TN/VA area? Any thoughts on converting to a
manual?
