If have trouble with the valves and sliders first suspect the steel cable .
There's a stretch that goes between the lever and the housing that seizes
and after repeated attempts bends so much as to be unsalvageable. If it's
doing this bending you must stop trying immediately.

Fixing it is a bitch.
