The last bad solenoid on a Vanagon that failed on me was about 1995, I
removed the solenoid and cleaned it to get eight more years out of it
without problems.
Might not be a bad idea to get under there and actually look at the
solenoid.
Loose push on connectors on the solenoid can cause some problems too.
